The Pueblo city directory shows an extensive Ranus family living in the house from 1924 through 1927. Three generations of Ranus family members called 1007 Lake Avenue home at the same time. Donald H. Ranus was shown as the head of household, with his wife Frances B. Donald and Frances' daughter Frances L. lived in the house as well. Donald's parents Isaac and Edna and uncle James L. Ranus Sr. also lived in the house with his wife Julia, son James L. Jr., and daughters Leona and Mary Elizabeth. Donald's brother Edward Wood Ranus lived in the house with another family member, Ruth E. Ranus. Ruth was a daughter to Isaac, and she may have died between 1925 and 1930. Sound confusing? To help, here is a Ranus family tree to the the best that we can determine. Each State and U.S. Census shows a different family layout, but Isaac and Edna remain constant.
In 1927, Donald H., Frances B., and Frances L. are shown living at 1205 Carteret Avenue (built in 1925). Only Isaac D, Edna, and Ruth E. are shown living at 1007 Lake Avenue in 1927. It is suspected that the reason the Ranus families moved out of 1007 Lake Avenue was that the current owner, Katherine Miles, died on March 9, 1926. Throughout 1926 and 1927, ownership of the house remained in probate. The uncertainty of a future landlord may have caused the families to seek residency elsewhere. According to the 1930 U.S. Census, all of the Ranus family members were living in other houses.
The family business was Ranus Hardware, 315 S. Union Avenue, currently Scott Office Supplies. In the Google Map photo, Scott Office Supplies is the building with the big pencil. One advertisement for the business was found in the1925 Central High School Wildcat annual.
