MULTIPLE FAMILIES

1930 to 1931

1007 Lake Avenue continued to be a boarding house through 1931. As the depression deepened, more and more people moved in and out of the house. At least six families lived in this house from what we could determine. There could have easily been more. The families that we were able to discover were named Bink, Bollinger, Scarlett, Martindale, Dillon, and Stanley. Currently we know little to nothing about these people. We wonder what families occupied what rooms, how old were they, what did they do to survive, and what happened to them after they moved out?

The 1930 U.S. Census (lines 60-67) shows the Bollingers and Dillons as the heads of households, and Mary Scarlett and James Martindale as boarders. The 1930 City Directory shows the Bink, Bollinger, and Stanley families living in the house. The 1931 City Directory (house summary) shows that the house was vacant. However, the 1931 City Directory (residents) also shows that the Bollingers still lived in the house.

Here is what we do know about each of these families. Our hope is to find out more so at least we can say that someone remembers these people.

Most likely William, Zelma, and Peter lived here. Pauline would have been 21 years old and could have been married. Kenneth at age 19 could have been out on his own in 1930. The City Directory does not list the Bink family immediately prior or after 1930.

The Bollinger family lived at 1119 E. Orman Avenue in Pueblo in 1929. The 1930 U.S. Census (Lines 60-63) shows that the Bollingers were one of two families living in the house here at 1007 Lake Avenue. Their stay here was short lived. In 1931, only Una E. Bollinger is listed as living at 1007 Lake Avenue. It is unknown why she was the only one listed as Una and Charles remained married for a long time...until death.

DILLON, 1930

The information found on James F. and Katie Louise (Dyer) Dillon is perplexing. The 1930 U.S. Census (Lines 66-67) shows that they lived in the house, but the 1930 City Directory shows no reference to James, and Katie (Kath and/or Kate) living at 2400 Erie Avenue. (Note: The 2400 block of Erie no longer exists. Erie stops at the 1800 block currently.) A year before, the 1929 City Directory shows that James F. and Katie (Kath) lived at 3101 Withers Avenue, and Katie (Kath) being a widow to James living at the Jordan Apartments, 125 W. 10th Street, Unit A1. Could it be that James died in 1929? Or 1930? Also, the Jordan Apartments no longer exist. Currently, the land where the complex would have sat is currently a parking lot owned by the County.

Prior to 1929, a 1910 U.S. Census was found that may list James' family (Lines 21-28). According to the Census, the family lived at 231 Santa Fe Row in Colorado Springs. The information in the 1910 Census for James matches the 1930 Census, except for the state in which his father is listed as being born.

Additional searches for a James F. Dillon with a birth date of 1901 resulted in multiple death notices. The same results occurred for Katie. Until we can confirm their birth dates, we will not know which (if any) of the records we found belong to our Dillons. One record that we are particularly excited to have found was their Marriage Certificate. They were married on January 5, 1928. The marriage was witnessed by Theodore E. Dyer and Howard N. Dyer. It is unknown at this time what relation these two held to Katie, but from information found in the 1930 U.S. Census Summary, it is suspected that they are her brothers.

STANLEY, 1930

Unconfirmed reports show that Martin resided at Willow Springs, Howell, Missouri in 1900. His siblings were Ernest C., Daisy E., Myrtle O. Their residence in 1895 was Henry, KS. The 1920 U.S. Census (Lines 19-22) has listed a family of four (Martin, Fannie, Mary B, and Wayne). Their address at the time was 520 N. Pine Street in Pratt, Kansas.

The 1930 City Directory shows the Stanley family as one of the sets of families that lived in the house. The City Directory listing under their name also confirms that they were at the house. However, the - 1930 U.S. Census (Lines 60-62) shows the Stanley family (consisting of Martin, Fannie, and Wayne) were living at 94 Block L in Pueblo. Mary had most likely married and moved away. Searches for the family in the City Directory did not turn up any information. It is unknown where they moved after leaving the house.

SCARLETT, 1930

The only reference to Mary Scarlett living in the house was the 1930 U.S. Census (Line 64). The Census was showing that she was a Housekeeper. Most likely, she was a live-in Housekeeper for the house. It is also showing that she was Divorced. The 1929 City Directory shows that she was a widow to Samuel H. Scarlett, living at 820 E. 5th Street. Then in 1931, the City Directory shows she was living at 110A West Abriendo Avenue. Currently, other than this information, nothing is known by us about Mary.

Mary Scarlett
Birth Year: 1866
Place of Birth: Illinois
Father's Place of Birth: Illinois
Mother's Place of Birth: Illinois
Occupation: Housekeeper

MARTINDALE, 1930

James E. Martindale was 19 years old when he called 1007 Lake Avenue home. James may have been just one of numerous individuals who blew through the house. The only reference to James that was found was in the 1930 U.S. Census (Line 65). He was not found in the City Directories for any year, and searches in the census reports turned up nothing.
