Articles were also found in the Bessemer Indicator. Here are two samples that were found from 1900. The address of his office was 2101/2 S. Union Avenue. Sadly, some time around 1953, the building was destroyed. Currently, there is simply a parking lot where the building once stood. |
According to the 1880 U.S. Census report, J. (John) Euclid Miles called Butler, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania home with his wife Mary A. Euclid. Then, ten years later, the Census Bureau shows they were listed as a resident of Pueblo, Pueblo County, Colorado. The Pueblo Directory first shows J. Euclid living in Pueblo in 1889. The directory has him listed as an Engineer for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, living at 34 Block V of Corona Park.
Then it appears that J. Euclid and Mary Ann lived at 1004 Lake Avenue in 1890 and 1891. His occupation included real estate, loans, and insurance. Each year it seemed that he had a different business partner. From 1892 through 1894, J. Euclid and Mary Ann lived at 1611 Palmer Avenue. The couple then moved back to 1004 Lake Avenue in 1895, and remained there until their new house at 1007 Lake Avenue was completed.
Records indicate that J. Euclid and Mary left Pueblo in July 1902, destination Santa Monica, California. Even though J. Euclid moved away from 1007 Lake Avenue, he maintained ownership of it. For the next 30 years, the house would become a rental unit.
The 1910 Census shows that they were in Santa Monica Ward 6, Los Angeles County, California. In the 1920 Census, J. Euclild was still in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California. However, some time between 1910 and 1916, Mary Ann Miles passed away, and J. Euclid had remarried to Katherine. Records were found that J. Euclid and Katherine were married on July 31, 1916, in New York.

J. Euclid and Katherine traveled from Liverpool, England to New York in 1924. They arrived on July 27, 1924 aboard the S.S. Adriatic. A copy of their passport application was found online. It is at this time J.Euclid is listed as a Santa Monica City Councilman. Sadly, J. Euclid died less than three months after returning from their trip.
The following article was found on the Ocean Park, California, website (http://www.oceanpark.ws/1908atest.htm#p.%20374):
Mr. Miles is the third of a family of seven children. He was educated in the public schools of Mount Gilead and Notre Dame, Ind., college, one of the most thorough educational institutions of its class in the country. After leaving college he entered a banking house in New York City, , until 1873, when he re- [p. 375] turned to Ohio and entered the motive power department of the C.C.C. & I.R. Ry., learned mechanics and became a first class locomotive engineer. For nearly sixteen years he followed this strenuous calling.
In 1889 he gave up his position of the railroad at Pueblo, Colorado. Here he engaged in the loaning, real estate and insurance business. For a period of about twenty-two years he remained in Pueblo. He prospered in business and was recognized as one of the most energetic and influential citizens of the place. The Pueblo Star-Journal, of July 15th, 1906, has this to say of Mr. Miles, who was on a business trip to his former home city:
"J. Euclid Miles, a well known real estate man of Santa Monica, Cal., leaves for his home on the Pacific Slope today at noon. Mr. Miles was a resident of Pueblo for twenty years, leaving for California about four years ago on account of Mr. Miles health. During a large share of the time he resided in our city, he was engaged in the real estate business and bore the reputation of being one of the most energetic hustlers in the business."
Mr. Miles acquired valuable property interests in Pueblo which he still holds. He came to Santa Monica in July, 1902, and soon thereafter organized the Santa Monica Investment Company, a business enterprise that has been most active and successful in the work of building and developing homes in this region of the country. Mr. Miles is the general manager of this company.
In August, 1905, Mr. Miles organized the real estate firm of Miles & Tegner, which became the heaviest purchaser and owner of first class realty in the City of Santa Monica.
Mr. Miles promptly became identified with the substantial growth and development fho is adopted city and active in the promotion of its civil welfare. He was elected to the City Council from the Sixth Ward, under the new Freeholders Charter of 1906, and placed at the head of the Committee on Finance and made a member of other committees of less importance. His policy in directing the financial affairs of the city proved one of wise economy and judicious expenditure.
On May 26th, 1872, Mr. Miles married in New York City to Miss Mary Ann Moore, a native of Queens County, Ireland, and the daughter of John Moore.
Mr. Miles is a prominent and active member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks, Independent Order of Foresters and National Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
