BERG FAMILY

1906 to 1924

Amazingly, this is the family where we have found the most about. William (born Wilhelm) and Tora had two daughters, Elsie and Ingrid. With the exception of Tora Berg, each member has documents that relate to them attached to their biography. There is still so much to learn about this family. Much of what we have about the Berg family occurred after they moved out of our house.

The Pueblo City Directories show that William was not listed as married until after he moved into this house. The first time his wife Tora (also seen as Dora) was listed in the City Directory was 1913. We have posted these listing at the bottom of this page.

In 1910, the family took a trip to Sweden. On June 5th, William and his daughters took the Cedric from New York to Liverpool. Tora was not listed on the ship's manifest. On the return trip, the women of the family returned from Sweden on October 1, 1910. Their return trip was aboard the TSS Rotterdam. The Berg family is shown here on a copy of the ship's manifest (lines 8-10). It is unknown why the parents took the trip separately.

In 1924, they moved down the street to the house they bought at 1715 Lake Avenue. They did not have it built as the house at 1715 Lake Avenue was built in 1913. It is suspected that the Berg's move down the street was initiated with the death of J. Euclid Miles. William most likely believed that Katherine Miles would sell the house, and the new owners would require that the Bergs vacate the property.

Elsie married in 1927, and moved out of the house some time between the wedding and 1930, as the 1930 U.S. Census (lines 69-71) shows the household consisted of William, Tora, and Ingrid. The U.S. Census reports, Pueblo City Directory listings, and Voter Registrations are listed at the bottom of this page.

The family (William, Tora, and Ingrid) made a visit to Sweden in 1930. On the return trip, they arrived into New York from Göteborg, Sweden. They are shown on the ship's manifest (lines 12-14) for the S.S. Mauretania for August 23, 1930. It appears that the family relocated to San Diego, California, shortly after they returned from Sweden.

Wilhelm (William) Edward Berg

Wilhelm (William) Edward Berg
Date of Birth: May 26, 1866
Place of Birth: Karlstad, Sweden
Date of Death:
Place of Death:
Place of Burial:
Spouse: Tora C.
Date of Marriage:
Children: Elsie, Ingrid M.
Date of Immigration: January 4, 1893
Occupation: Mechanical Engineer, Chief Draftsman (CF&I)
Personal Information: William immigrated to the United States from Sweden, but the dates seem to be varied depending on the source of information. Records also show that he was naturalized on April 6, 1921. Hopefully additional research will be able to pin point more exact dates.

We found the trip where he immigrated from Sweden to the United States. This ship's manifest (line 126) is for the British ship Bothnia, on January 4, 1893. It is hard to read, but William's name is found on Line 126 and is shown as "V. Edw. Berg".

The 1900 U.S. Census shows that William (age 35) called 3411 Ward Street, Pittsburgh Ward 14, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania home. He was reported as single and was boarding at the home of Sarah A. Russell (age 61). The first record in the City Directory of William was in 1902.

On September 10th, 1903, William and Tora came arrived in New York aboard the S.S. Hellig Olav. A copy of the ship manifest (lines 16 and 17) shows that William first came to the United States in 1893, and Tora in 1898. Both William and Tora were listed as having the last residence before coming to America as being in Stockholm, Sweden. It is suspected that William and Tora returned to the U.S. after being married in Sweden.

Perhaps the most amazing documents that we were able to find were William's naturalization papers. Here are the copies of his Declaration of Intention, Page 1 and Page 2, dated September 12, 1918. We also have a copy of his Petition for Naturalization, dated December 16, 1920.

During his employment at CF&I, William was featured in several news articles. He and co-workers were photographed for this Camp and Plant, June 6, 1903 article, and again in this Industrial Bulletin, October 15, 1925 article. These articles were obtained from the Colorado Fuel & Iron Archives, Bessemer Historical Society. It is believed that William retired from CF&I between 1926 and 1930, as the 1930 U.S. Census (Line 69) is not showing an occupation for him.

Currently, we do not know the exact date that William died, but it is believed to have been prior to 1942 as he is not listed in the in the 1942 California Voter Registrion list. It is also believed that he died and is buried in San Diego. Attempts to locate the Berg family burial places is currently underway.

Tora C. (Winstrand) Berg

Tora C. (Winstrand) Berg
Date of Birth: April 26, 1876
Place of Birth: Meaborg, Finland
Date of Death: December 8, 1950
Place of Death: San Diego, California
Place of Burial:
Spouse: William E.
Date of Marriage:
Children: Elsie, Ingrid M.
Date of Immigration: 1894
Occupation:
Personal Information: On September 10th, 1903, William and Tora came arrived in New York aboard the S.S. Hellig Olav. A copy of the ship manifest (lines 16 and 17) shows that William first came to the United States in 1893, and Tora in 1898. Both William and Tora were listed as having the last residence before coming to America as being in Stockholm, Sweden. While her nationality was listed as Finish, her race was listed as Russian.

A couple of records indicate that her first name was Dora, but most show Tora. This could be simply a data entry error as someone may have misread the spelling of her first name. Her name on the ship's manifest (line 8) for her 1910 trip aboard the S.S. Roterdam shows Dora, but the S.S. Mauretania's August 23, 1930, ship's manifest (line 13) shows Tora.

Records indicate that she immigrated from Finland in the year 1894, but the above mentioned 1903 ship manifest states that she first came to the U.S. in 1898. It is unknown which document was correct. Her mother's maiden name was Ekman, and was born in Finland, and her father's surname was Winstrand, and was born in Sweden.

Income Tax records were found for William and Tora for the years 1914 (line 22) and 1915 (line 14).

Elsie Ida Berg

Elsie Ida Berg
Date of Birth: July 2, 1904
Place of Birth: Colorado
Date of Death: February 17, 1994
Place of Death: San Diego, California
Place of Burial:
Spouse: Paul Adrian Gray (b: March 15, 1904, d: October 16, 1965)
Date of Marriage: July 20, 1927
Children: Paul Adrian, Jr. (born January 20, 1929)
Occupation: Housewife
Personal Information: Elsie was a Central High School (Pueblo) graduate of 1922. The photograph to the left was her senior class picture. Attached is a copy of some of the image captures from Elsie's high school album: Junior Class Picture, Junior Initials, Senior Class Picture, an excerpt from her Senior album, and the Aletheorian Literary Society page.

In the 1925 City Directory, Elsie is listed as a student. It is unknown which college she was attending during this time.

The reason that Elsie was not with her family in the 1930 Census is that she became married and moved to San Diego, California. She married Paul Adrian Gray on July 20, 1927. The marriage was witnessed by both both fathers, William Berg and Peter A. Gray. Here is a copy of the Marriage Certificate.

The 1930 U.S. Census (lines 42-44) list Paul's occupation as a file clerk with a gas company. Paul was also born in Pueblo, and was of Swedish heritage. Elsie gave birth to a son on January 20, 1929. They named him Paul Adrian Gray, Jr. The census shows that Paul Jr. was born in Colorado. It is a guess then that Elsie and family moved to San Diego later in 1929, or early in 1930 before the census was taken. Note that they were renting a house at 4567 Georgia Street in San Diego for $35 a month. Sadly, this house no longer exists. It was destroyed and replaced with an apartment building in 1933.

The family moved to 3801 Belmont by 1932, and then to 4600 Terrace Drive in 1936. They would remain at this address until after William died. They then moved in with Tora and Ingrid at 4644 Kensington Drive by 1942. By 1944, Ingrid had married, and it was Tora and the Gray family living on Kensington Drive.

Ingrid M. Berg

Ingrid M. Berg
Date of Birth: June 29, 1907
Place of Birth: Pueblo, Colorado
Date of Death: December 25, 1993 (Heart Failure)
Place of Death: San Diego
Place of Burial:
Spouse: Herman Neuman, b: June 11, 1900 or 1901 (Germany), d: March 14, 1967
Date of Marriage: Between 1940 and 1942
Children:
Occupation: Teacher, Secretary
Personal Information: It is suspected that she was born in the house, but that has yet been confirmed. All records show that she continued to live at home until after 1930. As with Elsie, Ingrid was a Central High School (Pueblo) graduate. Elsie graduated in 1922, Ingrid in 1925. The spotlight photograph to the left was her senior class picture. Other photographs obtained from the Central Wildcat albums are: Sophomore Class Picture, Junior Sayings, Junior Roster, Senior French Club, Senior Owls Club group photo, and Senior Owls Club roster.

Four years later, in 1929, Ingrid was listed in the City Directory as a student. Like her sister four years previously, it is unknown which college she was attending. In the 1930, she was teaching at Central Grade School. She was no longer listed in the 1931 City Directory. It is suspected that she moved out to San Diego to set up residence in preparation for the relocation of her parents. Records would probably show that William and Tora sold their house at 1715 Lake Avenue in late 1930 or late 1931.

In 1932, Ingrid was living with her parents again at 4644 Kensington Drive in San Diego. Ingrid would be at this address until her marriage. By 1944, her and her husband were living at 5911 Estelle Street in San Diego.
